How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone
Updated July 2026
Duplicate photos are one of the fastest ways to reclaim iPhone storage. Here's the built-in method that comes with iOS, and how to catch the near-duplicates it misses.
Method 1: Apple's built-in Duplicates album (iOS 16+)
iOS can detect exact duplicates for you:
- Open the Photos app.
- Go to Albums and scroll to Utilities.
- Tap Duplicates. iOS lists sets it has identified.
- Tap Merge on a set (or Select to merge several). Merging keeps the highest-quality version and combines its data, then moves the extras to Recently Deleted.
This is safe and free, and it should be your first step.
Method 2: Catch the near-duplicates too
Here's the important limitation: Apple's Duplicates album only finds exact duplicates. It does not catch near-duplicates, and those are often the bulk of photo clutter:
- burst shots and rapid-fire photos of the same moment;
- edited copies saved alongside the original;
- images re-saved from Messages, WhatsApp, or screenshots of photos;
- the same shot sent and received at different resolutions.
A dedicated cleaner like Reclaim uses on-device image analysis to group both exact and near-duplicate photos, automatically keeps the best copy, and explains which copy it kept, so you delete only the extras. It also sorts each set by how much space it will free. All of this runs on your device; nothing is uploaded.
Is it safe to delete duplicate photos?
Yes, as long as you review what you're removing. Whether you use Apple's tool or an app, deleted photos go to Photos › Albums › Recently Deleted and stay recoverable for about 30 days. That's your safety net: don't empty Recently Deleted until you've confirmed the cleanup. Reclaim never deletes anything without you tapping to confirm.
How much space can duplicates free?
It varies, but cluttered libraries commonly hold 10–20% redundant media. On a heavily-used iPhone that can be several gigabytes from duplicates and near-duplicates alone, often the difference between "Storage Almost Full" and comfortably free space.
